Martin was born in 1955 in Princeton, New Jersey, where she grew up. She attended Smith College and graduated with a degree in Psychology in 1977. Martin moved to New York City and took a job as an editor for children's books. During this time, she also began to write. She wrote her first book, Bummer Summer, in 1983 and it was published a year later. She gained huge popularity with her series Baby-Sitters Club which was first published in 1986.
