Anthony Doerr

Anthony Doerr is an American author of novels and short stories. He received the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for his second novel, All the Light We Cannot See, set in occupied France during World War II. His works have been published in over 40 languages and won numerous accolades.

Background

Doerr was born in 1973 in Cleveland, Ohio. He grew up in a suburb of Cleveland and attended the University School, a college-preparatory school. He then went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in history from Bowdoin College in Maine, and a master’s degree in fine arts from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. His first book, a collection of short stories called The Shell Collector, was published in 2002. However, his breakthrough work was the novel All the Light We Cannot See, published in 2014, which went on to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2015. The novel was also a finalist for the National Book Award and was a New York Times Best Seller. Doerr also received the Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction for his distinguished work.
