Background
Koontz was born in 1945 in Everett, Pennsylvania and was raised in Bedford, Pennsylvania. He was regularly beaten and abused by his alcoholic father, which influenced his later writings. He attended Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania, where he won a fiction competition sponsored by Atlantic Monthly magazine. After graduation, he worked as an English teacher at Mechanicsburg High School. In his spare time, he wrote his first novel, "Star Quest", which was published in 1968.
In 1969, he quit teaching to pursue his writing full time. He wrote under various pseudonyms earlier in his career, including David Axton, Leigh Nichols, and Brian Coffey. His novels are broadly described as suspense thrillers, but also frequently incorporate elements of horror, fantasy, science fiction, mystery, and satire. Several of his books have appeared on The New York Times Best Seller List, with 14 hardcovers and 16 paperbacks reaching the number one position. His best-known works are "Intensity", "Phantoms", and his series featuring his beloved character, Odd Thomas.
