E. B. White

Elwyn Brooks "E. B." White was an American writer and a world federalist. He is best known for his books for children, including Stuart Little (1945), Charlotte's Web (1952), and The Trumpet of the Swan (1970). He was also a contributor to The New Yorker magazine and co-author of the English language style guide, The Elements of Style.

Background

White was born in 1899 in Mount Vernon, New York. He attended Cornell University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1921. After graduation, he worked for the United Press and the American Legion News Service in New York City. He then spent two years with the New Yorker magazine, where he met and fell in love with Katherine Sergeant Angell, who he married in 1929. The couple had one son.

White is best known for his children's books, including Stuart Little (1945), Charlotte's Web (1952), and The Trumpet of the Swan (1970). In addition to his children's literature, he also wrote essays and books for adults, including one of the most widely read and used guides on English grammar and usage, The Elements of Style. He passed away in 1985.
