Erich Segal

Erich Wolf Segal was an American author, screenwriter, and classics professor. He is best-known for his novel "Love Story", a best-seller that delivered a tear-jerking tale of love and loss and was later made into a hit movie. He also wrote the screenplays for The Beatles' motion picture Yellow Submarine and the motion picture Love Story.

Background

Segal was born in 1937 in Brooklyn, New York, to Jewish parents from Eastern European descent. He graduated from Harvard College in 1958 with a bachelor's degree in classics. He then obtained a master's degree in 1959 and Ph.D. in 1965 in comparative literature, both from Harvard University. Segal served as an assistant and associate professor of classics and Comparative Literature at Harvard University. He also taught at Yale University. His first novel, Love Story, was published in 1970 and quickly became a bestseller. He followed this success with several other novels of equal success, such as Oliver's Story and The Class. He also wrote screenplays for films and continue writing until his death in 2010.
