James Clavell

Charles Edmund Dumaresq Clavell, better known as James Clavell, was a British (later naturalized American) novelist, screenwriter, director, and World War II veteran and POW. He is best known for his epic Asian Saga series of novels and their televised adaptations, along with his screenwriting efforts on such films as The Great Escape and To Sir, with Love.

Background

Clavell was born in 1921 in Sydney, Australia, and his family moved to England when he was very young. In his twenties, while serving as a British Royal Artillery officer in World War II, he was captured and spent three years in a Japanese prisoner of war camp. This experience greatly influenced his writing and sparked a life-long interest in East Asia. After the war, he worked in the film industry as a screenwriter, director, and producer, and he also began writing novels. His first published novel, King Rat, was based on his experiences as a prisoner of war. Clavell's most known work, Shōgun, is a historical novel set in Japan about a British sailor stranded in Japan. Clavell continued writing successful novels throughout his life, mostly focused on Asian themes until he passed away in 1994.
