Patterson was born in 1947 in Newburgh, New York. He grew up in a working-class family and developed an early love of reading. He graduated summa cum laude from Manhattan College with a Bachelor of Arts in English, and went on to earn a Master of Arts in English from Vanderbilt University. He worked as a junior copywriter for the advertising agency J. Walter Thompson, where he eventually became CEO. He began writing in the late 1970s, with his first novel, "The Thomas Berryman Number," published in 1976.
