Background
Grisham was born in 1955 in Arkansas and raised in Mississippi. After studying accounting at Mississippi State University, he went on to earn his law degree from the University of Mississippi School of Law in 1981. He practiced law for nearly a decade, specializing in criminal defense and personal injury litigation. He also served in the Mississippi House of Representatives from 1984 until 1990. He began writing his first novel, A Time to Kill, in 1984; it was published in 1988. Since then, he has written more than 30 novels, his most popular being legal thrillers such as The Firm, The Pelican Brief, and The Runaway Jury. Several of his books have been turned into movies and television shows.
