Background

Donleavy was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1926, to Irish immigrant parents. He served in the US Navy during World War II, before attending Trinity College in Dublin on the GI Bill. While studying in Ireland, he began to write, eventually publishing his first novel, The Ginger Man, in 1955. The book was initially banned in the United States and Ireland for obscenity but has since been recognized as a modern classic. Partially autobiographical, the novel reflects Donleavy's experiences studying and socializing in post-war Dublin. After his success in the literary world, he continued to write and enjoyed a full career in novelist, playwright, and painter. Donleavy became an Irish citizen in 1967 and lived in County Westmeath, Ireland, until his death in 2017.
