Donaldson was born in 1948 in London, England. She grew up in a musical family and always had a strong interest in drama and storytelling. She studied Drama and French at Bristol University. After graduation, she worked as a broadcaster and journalist with BBC Radio and published her first book, A Squash and a Squeeze in 1993. This marked the start of her partnership with illustrator Axel Scheffler. The pair are best known for their popular rhyming picture book, The Gruffalo. Since then, she has written over 100 books and plays for children and teenagers, including Room on the Broom and Stick Man. She was appointed the UK Children's Laureate in 2011 and has won numerous awards for her work.
