Lemony Snicket, whose real name is Daniel Handler, was born in 1970 in San Francisco, California. He was raised in a Jewish family. As a child, he attended the San Francisco Boys Chorus and attended Commodore Sloat Elementary, a public school. After finishing high school, he attended Wesleyan University, where he was a member of the sketch comedy group. After college, he lived in New York City, where he worked as a novelist and script assistant for a film director.
In 1999, he published the first book in A Series of Unfortunate Events under the pen name Lemony Snicket. The series, which consisted of 13 books, was translated into many languages and sold millions of copies around the world. The series was made into a Netflix series in 2017. He also wrote the All the Wrong Questions series under the Lemony Snicket name.
