Background
Zusak was born in 1975 in Sydney, Australia. He is the youngest of four children of Austrian and German immigrants. He grew up hearing stories about Nazi Germany, about the bombing of Munich, and about Jews being marched through his mother’s small, German town. These stories inspired him to write The Book Thief, published in 2005, a book set in Nazi Germany and narrated by Death. With this book, he won numerous awards and it has been translated into many different languages. He is also the author of The Messenger (published in America as I Am the Messenger), which won the 2003 Children’s Book Council of Australia Book of the Year Award.
