Thomas Michael Bond, better known as Michael Bond, was a British author, most famous for his Paddington Bear series of children's books. The series, which continued for over 50 years, is about a small bear from Peru with a fondness for marmalade who is found at Paddington Station in London, inspiring the name. Bond's works have been translated into many languages and have sold millions of copies worldwide.

Background

Bond was born in Newbury, Berkshire in 1926 to a postal worker and a homemaker. He was educated at Presentation College where he developed a strong interest in writing stories. After serving in both the Royal Air Force and the British Army during World War II, he moved to London in 1947 to pursue a career in writing and broadcasting. His first Paddington Bear book, "A Bear called Paddington", was published in 1958. The book became immensely successful and prompted a series of novels, television adaptations, and films based on this beloved character. Other characters Bond created include Olga da Polga and Monsieur Pamplemousse. Michael Bond passed away in 2017, but his creations continue to charm and entertain children around the world.
