Michael Crichton

John Michael Crichton was an American author, screenwriter, and film director and producer. Best known for his work in the science fiction, thriller, and medical fiction genres, he has been aptly described as "the father of the techno-thriller". His most notable works include Jurassic Park, Andromeda Strain, and ER.

Background

Crichton was born in 1942 in Chicago, Illinois, but grew up in Roslyn, New York. He attended Harvard University, where he studied biological anthropology and graduated summa cum laude. After Harvard, he attended and graduated from Harvard Medical School, although he never practiced professionally. Instead, he pursued a career in writing and worked as a visiting writer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His first novel, The Andromeda Strain, was published in 1969 and it brought him wide recognition. Known for his science fiction, thriller, and medical fiction works, his books include Jurassic Park, Congo, and Timeline, many of which have been adapted into films. Crichton also created the television series ER. He died in 2008.
