Nicholas Charles Sparks is an American novelist, screenwriter, and philanthropist. He is best known for his romance novels, many of which have been adapted into successful films, including "The Notebook", "A Walk to Remember", "Dear John", and "Safe Haven".

Background

Sparks was born in 1965 in Omaha, Nebraska, to a professor and a homemaker. He was raised in a Catholic household along with his brother and sister. After attending Bella Vista High School, he received a full track and field scholarship to the University of Notre Dame, where he set a school record for the 4x800 relay in 1985. After graduation, he worked in various jobs including real estate appraisal and pharmaceutical sales before he penned his first novel, The Passing, which was never published. His first published novel, The Notebook, came in 1996 and became a bestseller. Many of his novels such as A Walk to Remember, Message in a Bottle, have been adapted as successful movies. His works often explore themes love, faith, tragedy, and fate.
