Norman Ray Bridwell was an American author and cartoonist, best-known for the Clifford the Big Red Dog series of children's books. Bridwell's most famous character, Clifford, is a giant red dog who is the faithful companion of a girl named Emily Elizabeth, and his adventures have entertained generations of children.

Background

Bridwell was born on 1928 in Kokomo, Indiana. Growing up during the Great Depression, he developed a love for drawing and was inspired by comic strips, especially Little Orphan Annie. He attended the John Herron Art Institute in Indianapolis before moving to New York City in 1951 to pursue a career in commercial art. In the mid-1960s, he started to write and illustrate children's books. His first success was Clifford The Big Red Dog, published in 1963 by Scholastic. The character of Clifford was inspired by his childhood fantasy of owning a dog so large it could take him to school. The book gained popularity thanks to its bright, simple illustrations and ever-loving big-hearted dog. It was later adapted into an animated television show. Bridwell passed away in 2014 at the age of 86.
