Background
Pullman was born in 1946 in Norwich, England. His father, an airman for the Royal Air Force, was killed in a plane crash in 1954. Pullman and his younger brother moved with their mother to North Wales, where he spent a large part of his childhood. He graduated from Exeter College in Oxford with a degree in English, and then worked as a teacher while writing novels. Pullman’s most famous work is the His Dark Materials trilogy, published between 1995 and 2000. The trilogy has been adapted into film, stage plays, a radio drama, and a television series. Aside from writing, he is also a supporter of public libraries and serves as a patron of several literacy charities. He received a knighthood for his services to literature in the 2019 New Year Honours.
